Sr. Director of Developer Advocacy

Timescale is looking for an experienced Sr. Director of Developer Advocacy to lead our Developer Advocacy team. You and your team will be responsible for all of our outbound developer content, including product documentation, blog posts, benchmarks, tutorials, sample applications, videos, live streams, and much more. Developer Advocates are our top spokespeople to technical audiences, earning speaking slots and delivering sessions at conferences worldwide.

Successful candidates for this position are experienced Developer Advocates. They have a phenomenal body of work as evidence of their expertise in the craft, including blog posts, tutorials, published articles, published books, videos, a vibrant and helpful social media presence, and more. 

They will also have significant experience hiring and coaching great Developer Advocacy talent. We’ve built a strong, diverse, and fun team, and finding the right person to motivate, lead, and grow our team is our primary focus. This role is remote in the North American or EMEA timezones, and English language fluency is a requirement.

Job Responsibilities

  • Build a high-performing Developer Advocacy team and grow and nurture their careers.
  • Lead the team in the development of all technical content, including documentation.
  • Work closely with all stakeholders to set proper expectations and ensure timely completion of all deliverables.
  • Coach and mentor the team on how to nurture and build strong developer communities, working closely with our Developer Marketing team to accomplish our goals.
  • Build a top-flight event speaker program, submit CFPs in a timely manner, deliver sessions with the highest possible speaker scores, and earn a reputation as a technically credible, developer-first organization.
  • Support our first- and third-party event plan by coaching and mentoring the Developer Advocacy team on how to provide a phenomenal customer experience at booths, community sessions, and networking opportunities.
  • Ensure that our public Slack and customer forums are vibrant and active, and that questions are answered in a timely manner.
  • Support Marketing leadership with the development, tracking, and management of strategic marketing objectives, campaigns, and deliverables.
  • Act as a senior leader in the company, bringing gravitas, technical acumen, and influence to key strategic issues.

Experience and Skills

  • 10+ years of industry expertise.
  • 8+ years of Developer Advocacy experience at a top-tier developer program, 4+ years of managing Developer Advocates.
  • Proven expertise working with databases, time-series data, or similar technologies.
  • A gifted communicator who is capable of distilling complex technical subject matter into digestible, actionable prose.
  • A roll-up-your-sleeves attitude to do the heavy lifting required to build a great Developer Advocacy discipline at Timescale.
  • A proven track record of identifying great Developer Advocacy talent, growing future Developer Advocacy leaders, and improving the discipline of Developer Advocacy industry-wide.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation creation and delivery skills.
  • Excellent cross-organizational collaboration skills. You can work across the team, across roles, and synthesize viewpoints and reach consensus.
  • A self-starter that can manage and prioritize initiatives that will make developers successful.
  • A passion for developers and nerd culture. 
  • A belief that organizations and industries are best when they are diverse and inclusive, and a commitment to ensuring that everything we do reflects that belief.
  • Works well independently and remotely.
